1980 Ford Ad Pitch Storyboard, "American Worker"

It's the real world version of Mad Men - the storyboard for a pitch to the Ford Motor Company. The ad is "American Worker" and it shows Ford's Worker Involvement Program, as told through the story of Gulliver, and closes with the line "There's a Ford in America's Future," a take on the famous Ford catchphrase from the 1940s. It dates to around 1980, when Japanese imports were increasing their share of the US auto market.

It's the work of the agency Wells, Rich, Greene, which was founded by Mary Wells Lawrence in 1966. Some have speculated that Mary Wells served as at least partial inspiration for Peggy Olsen's character on Mad Men, but regardless, Wells Rich Green was responsible for some of the most iconic ad campaigns in history: "Plop Plop Fizz Fizz," "Flick your Bic," and for Ford, whose business they won in 1979, "Quality is Job 1."

The ad may or may not have ever been made, but the storyboard is an incredibly rare piece of advertising ephemera full of original illustrations, and a time-capsule look at the issues of a critical era in American history!
